Ladies First

Bigotry has not been eliminated, but a great deal of Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream has been achieved in America. In large part because of the energy and activism of groups such as the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). But also, importantly, because the battle was being fought in a culture where individual rights had come to be understood and actively defended. A culture that values life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Dr. King, if he were alive today, would be delighted to see that little black children and little white children often go to school together, sit down together for meals, and play together. He would see it as his dream come true that black and white Americans are friends, colleagues and spouses.

But if Dr. King were alive today he would also notice that segregation still exists. Oh, he would feel the thrill of success to learn that there are no legal barriers in the US that put black people in a position of disadvantage. But he would notice that demolishing legal barriers between citizens is only half the battle. Nothing illustrates this invisible segregation better than what happened in New Orleans last year and how the nation in turn responded--or did not respond.

Dr. King’s dream for equality went beyond blacks and whites. The Jewish community, for one, can relate to it through their own struggles. Sixty years ago it was the Nazis in Europe who were bent on exterminating them in the name of racial purity. Today it is a global network of radical Muslims who call for a holocaust in the name of their faith. 

On a global level Dr. King Jr. would be pleased to note that Nelson Mandela is free and that apartheid was brought to an end with the minimum of violence. But he would be deeply distressed by the combination of slave trade and genocide that continues, day after day, in Darfur, Sudan.

What has all this got to do with me? I have only just arrived in America and I have never been a victim of racial prejudice. By the time I was born, the part of Africa I grew up in--Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya--was independent. The white man had gone home.

The generation belonging to my parents and grandparents talked of oppression by the white man. But when the white man left, he clearly didn’t take the oppression with him. Almost all the bigotry and persecution in Africa nowadays is committed by blacks against other blacks. Proof yet again that just as virtues of kindness, generosity and inclusion transcend skin colour, so do vices of cruelty, greed and exclusion.

I am being acknowledged here today because CORE wants to take Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream beyond racial inequality. CORE wants to be a platform from where the greatest inequality of our time, perhaps of all time, can be battled.

This is gender inequality: an inequality most obscene, expressed through acts such as mutilation, beatings, rape and murder--and almost all this aggression is justified in the name of culture and creed. Atrocities committed against girls and women in the most intimate setting of all: in the home; by dad or mom; by a brother or a sister; by a husband or his mother. The sort of persecution I talk about is one in which the religious leaders, the politicians, aunts and uncles, fathers and mothers, all share the staunch belief that girls--that women--are born of a lesser god.

I was born into this culture. And I stress my emphasis on the word “culture”.

When I first came to a Western country, I was astonished to find men who said, "Ladies first"--yes, ladies first. I was amazed because I was born and raised in a culture that put me last because I was born a girl; where I was confined, because of my gender; where all the burden of what is considered good sexual conduct was for me to bear because I am female.

Whereas here in this culture, where men say "ladies first":

• I saw how couples often struggle together to carry the burden of parenthood.
• I saw how parents prepare their sons and daughters equally to learn the skills of securing a livelihood.
• I saw how schools and even governments coach boys and girls in understanding and restraining their sexuality.

If I allow myself to be inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., then my dream is that those lucky enough to be born into a culture of "ladies first" will let go of the myth that all cultures are equal.

Human beings are equal; cultures are not.

A culture that celebrates femininity is not equal to a culture that trims the genitals of her girls.

A culture that holds the door open to her women is not equal to one that confines them behind walls and veils.

A culture that spends millions on saving a baby girl’s life is not equal to a one that uses its first encounter with natal technology to undertake mass abortion simply because baby girls are not welcome.

A culture with courts that punish a husband for forcing his wife to have sex with him is not equal to a culture with a tribunal that decrees a young woman be gang-raped for talking to a boy of an allegedly higher caste.

A culture that encourages dating between young men and young women is not equal to a culture that flogs or stones a girl for falling in love.

A culture where monogamy is an aspiration is not equal to a culture where a man can lawfully have four wives all at once.

A culture that protects women’s rights by law is not equal to a culture that denies women their alimony and half their inheritance.

A culture that insists on holding open a position for women in its Supreme Court is not equal to a culture that declares that the testimony of a woman is worth half of that of a man.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of racial equality has become a reality for some and remains a dream for many. It has become a reality for the few people privileged enough to live in this culture that values the human individual regardless of race or gender. It is this culture that provides me with the vocabulary, the legal tools, the material resources, the platforms, and most of all, the opportunity to meet like minded individuals who will stand for the rights of those fellow girls and women who haven’t been as lucky as me or you.

It is within this culture that it pays to fight for equality.

Unfortunately, it is this culture that is under threat today. Many of those born into it take it for granted--or worse, apologise for it.

So dear men and women of colour, and dear women of all colour: Let’s join together to protect this culture of life, this culture of liberty, this culture of "ladies first."

Zo ken ik Ayaan weer. En het sluit precies aan met mijn opvatting dat men in hier, in Nederland althans, maar dat zal wel in de hele westerse cultuur zijn, er zomaar vanuit gaat dat alles gewoon, in alle vrijheid, doorgaat. Maar zo werkt het niet.

Volksvertegenwoordigers, kunstenaars en cartoonisten worden bedreigd en mensen nemen het inmiddels voor "granted" aan. Ik kan er nog steeds niet bij dat Balkenende de Deense regering niet steunde m.b.t. de cartoonkwestie. Dan vraag je om moeilijkheden.

Kun je nagaan wat een invloed bedreigingen hebben. Wie zei alweer dat "schelden geen pijn" doet. Nee, maar je kunt er wel een mentaliteit van een volk mee veranderen en op den duur doet het wel pijn, maar ja, dat heeft blijkbaar niemand in de gaten.

Ook hier bij deze gelegenheid maakt Ayaan wederom duidelijk dat dit bovenstaande net als de zaken die Bert hierboven al noemt een zaak is en blijft waar zij zich altijd en overal voor in blijft zeten.

Beste @bert bruin en ook @metatron. N.a.v. mijn artikel 'Moslima in eigen badpak' lieten jullie beiden weten meer voor het visuele effect te gaan dan voor de inhoud. Daar is op het oog niets mis mee.

Na het lezen van Ayaan' artikel laat @bert bruin nu weten: "Zo ken ik Ayaan weer." Dat is mooi. Maar waar handelt de boodschap die Ayaan ons voorhoudt in de kern om? AH, juist ja, om de (on)gelijkheid der seksen!

Ook Ayaan legt hier in kernachtige bewoordingen de nadruk op, alleen moet Ayaan daarbij wel elk woordje op een goudschaaltje leggen en kan ze niet 'openlijk' de vinger op de zere plek leggen en die is: het benoemen van de vele vrouwvijandige regels en geboden inherent aan elk patriarchaal gedomineerd religieus stelsel in het algemeen en t.a.v. de islam in het bijzonder.

Met deze kanttekening indachtig verzoek ik beiden toch nog eens voorbij te kijken aan het plaatje van de vouw in Eva's kostuum en kennis te nemen van onderstaand citaat (uit mijn artikel 'Moslima in eigen badpak') waarmee in de kern namelijk precies dezelfde (on)gelijkheid der seksen wordt benoemd, met dien verstande dat ik me i.t.t. Ayaan niet gehouden hoef te voelen om deze discriminatie (uit piëteit voor lange tenen) niet rechtstreeks aan de islam(cultuur) te relateren.

Hoezeer Ayaan, en met haar vele anderen bemoeid zijn om dit onomstotelijk gegeven met de semantisch mantel van begripsverzoening toe te dekken (Ayaan schrijft: And I stress my emphasis on the word “culture”.) feit blijft, dat ook zij tussen de regels door tot eenzelfde eindoordeel komen.

"Behalve de vele dogmatische elementen - ontegenzeggelijk inherent aan elke religie die van zichzelf zegt de waarheid in pacht te hebben - wordt het steeds 'zichtbaarder' dat de islam moslima's een op de vrouw toegesneden schaamtecultuur opdringt.

Een diepgewortelde lichaamsvijandigheid en 'onnodige' preutsheid in het bijzonder voor het (vrouwelijke) lichaam, voor lust en erotiek. Een tegennatuurlijke schaamtecultuur die er zonder twijfel voor zorgt dat veel moslima's gedwongen worden om zich van top tot teen te bedekken.

Vele decennia lang heeft het westen een traditie gekend waarin talloze psychosociale wetenschappers, denkers en politici van naam en faam de intellectuele voorhoede vormden: d.w.z. zij aan zij stonden in hun gezamenlijke emancipatiestrijd voor meer menselijke autonomie. Een strijd die in dit land (Nederland) kernachtig werd verwoord door de toenmalige Dolle Mina’s en bommoeders met een hen op het lijf geschreven motto: 'baas in eigen buik'. En bijna allemaal hebben ze een deel van hun naam en faam te danken juist vanwege de vooruitstrevende ideeën die zij er op na hielden als het ging om zaken als gelijkheid der seksen in het algemeen, en om 's mens (seksuele) vrijmaking in het bijzonder.

Dan berooft het je toch bijna van je nuchtere verstand te zien met welk een verachtelijk gemak veel van diezelfde wetenschappers, denkers en politici zodra het de (lichaamsvijandige) schaamtecultuur binnen de islam betreft alles wat tot dan toe als vooruitstrevend gold domweg aan de vrome kuisheidsdoctrine van moslims ondergeschikt maken en - vergeef mij de uitdrukking - bijna letterlijk in het islamitische maatkostuum worden genaaid!..."

Naar mijn bescheiden mening hield deze slogan in dat alleen de vrouw uitmaakt of zij abortus mag/kan plegen en dat daar geen externe partij in de vorm van een (veelal mannelijke) rechter het laatste woord in heeft. An sich had deze slogan niks met vrouwenemancipatie sec te maken. Dar waren veel eerder de suffragettes in het begin van de vorige eeuw toen vrouwen zich nog al kinderen barend achter het aanrecht bevonden. Dat kan van de zeer geëmancipeerde dolle mina's niet gezegd worden. Veelal oogden die toen al niet zo, zeg maar type Meulenbelt.

Dolle mina's waren wel allemaal belijdend lidmaat van de linkse kerk.

@Joop ik begrijp wat je zegt. Ik heb het emancipatievraagstuk - dat zoals jij zegt inderdaad al veer eerder een aanvang nam - meer op de 'lichamelijke' aspecten ervan toegespitst. En het individuele recht op zelfbeschikking, of het nu geboorte of dood betreft heeft altijd te maken met ons lichaam. Het patriarchale postulaat der zedelijkheid dat binnen de koranische doctrine is vastgelegd betekent een inherente aanvaarding van de sekseongelijkheid. Je kunt wel een heel ideologisch betoog houden over de vraag hoe we tot een zo'n groot mogelijke autonomie van het individu kunnen komen, maar volgens mij is dit aan de staart trekken van iets wat je om te beginnen vanuit (anti-)theologisch perspectief bij de kop moet nemen.

Dan stel ik voor eens te peilen hoe abortus ligt binnen de islam! Zien we dezelfde blote buiken dan ooit weer voorbijschuiven? Met hoofddoek op uiteraard? Lijkt me kek!
Dolle mina's waren overigens nooit zo mijn cup of tea zogezegd, maar dat zal wel komen door de Gnade der Frühgeburt. Allemaal types Meulenbelt. Brrrrr...Hoe die buikem ooit zo gevuld werden? lol

Het is toch op zijn minst vreemd te noemen dat er in Nederland geen krant te vinden is die ook maar enige aandacht heeft geschonken aan het feit dat Ayaan de Martin Luther King Heroes Award heeft gehad.
De enigste bij mijn weten is Elsevier een dag daarvoor met een piep klein stukje.

De banieren, pamfletten en andere uitingen van protest tegen achterlijke opvattingen over vrouwen en seksualiteit vanuit het (orthodoxe) christendom zijn schielijk opgeborgen, nu plotseling beoefenaars van een andere religie hun vrouwvijandigheid baseren op hun heilige boek. De godsdienstige leidraad, de Koran en Hadith, biedt geen ruimte voor een vrijere, meer seculiere omgang met vrouwelijke seksualiteit in het dagelijks leven van veel moslims.

Er ligt een duidelijk verband tussen jouw observaties en de laatste column van Sylvain Ephimenco van zaterdag 20 januri jl.

Met de CU medeverantwoordelijk voor de koers van ons schip van Staat de komende jaren vrees ik met Ephimenco een golf van ‘nieuwe preutsheid’ , geïnstigeerd door dezelfde Christen Unie met de zegen van het CDA van Jan-Peter Balkenende. Het christendom op zijn smalst herrijst als een sfinx uit haar as. We spreken m.i. over een negatieve ontwikkeling waarvan we dachten dat deze voorgoed tot ons (christelijk) verleden behoorde. Niets is minder waar, nu Rouvoet en zijn christelijke medestanders een soort zedelijkheidswetgeving wensen te herintroduceren in onze samenleving. De vrouw moet beschermd worden tegen de uitwassen van onze geseksualiseerde samenleving.
Ephimenco signaleert echter een akelige politieke correctheid in de morele verontwaardiging van de heer Rouvoet:

...”De CU is consequent, standvastig en recht door zee. Maar ook selectief. Wel voor een blootverbod, niet tegen de verbanning van de boerka uit het straatbeeld. In de Kamer stemde de partij tegen het wetsvoorstel om gezichtssluiers en boerka’s te verbieden. Je kunt je natuurlijk afvragen wat het meest schadelijk is voor de vrouwelijke waardigheid: de string of de boerka. Waarschijnlijk heeft de voorkeur van de CU te maken met het religieuze karakter van het orthodoxe moslimse kledingsstuk. Onder de boerka schuilt een zekere vroomheid, terwijl er achter de bikini alleen de geseculariseerde zedenloosheid valt te ontwaren..”

Het is voor mij een belangrijke reden te hopen op uiteindelijke mislukking van de gaande onderhandelingen tussen CDA, CU en PvdA.. Een dergelijk kabinet zal het bestaande Islampapolegisme versterken en bovendien nu aanvaardbare uitingen van seksuele vrijheid aan Victoriaanse banden leggen. Het vermeende christelijk-sociale karakter van het nieuwe kabinet krijgt daarmee onverwachte reactionaire trekjes.
Rouvoet zou zich m.i. moeten schamen voor het gemak, waarmee de vrouwenonderdrukking in de Islam door hem wordt genegeerd onder het mom van religieuze tolerantie. Iets wat zich m.i. op geen enkele wijze verdraagt met de christelijke naastenliefde waarmee hij gaarne schermt in interviews. Zijn mededogen beperkt zich tot de gelovige Nederlanders van allerlei religieuze gezindte, inclusief zij die de Islam met al haar onverdraagzaamheid en vrouwvijandigheid navolgen. Het multiculturalisme als politiek keurslijf heeft haar kwalijke effecten niet gemist. Geen kritiek op vrouwvijandigheid binnen de Nederlandse Islamitische gemeenschap uit de mond van Christen-Unie leider André Rouvoet.

In het debat over string versus boerka eindigt Ephimenco zijn column met de volgende (rhetorische) vraag:

“…Volgens Rouvoet is een boerka-verbod contraproductief ’omdat er de boodschap van uitgaat: in dit land mag je jezelf niet zijn’. Vraag aan André: wat voor boodschap gaat dan uit naar schaars geklede dames die van zijn partij een blootverbod aan hun string krijgen?”

De apostel Judas verloochende volgens de christelijke overlevering Jezus. Met enige overdrijving dicht ik ook de heer Rouvoet deze rol toe. Net als Judas wast hij zijn handen in morele onschuld, waar hij zich zou moeten uitspreken tégen de boerka als ultieme uiting van vrouwvijandigheid, zelfs vrouwenhaat in mijn oog. Met dezelfde verontwaardiging en bevlogenheid als hij nu zijn afschuw uit over het vrouwonterende karakter van de string.

Of de CU werkelijk tegen een blootverbod is zoals Ephi suggereert, vraag ik me af. Als ik het goed begrijp gaat het in Rotterdam om een lijstcombinatie van ChristenUnie en SGP. Met name die laatste partij is schattig, maar inderdaad volstrekt niet te vertrouwen als het om onze vrolijke seksualiteit gaat.
De Christenunie is op dit gebied toch heel wat wereldser en ik denk niet dat zij de string of bodypaint gaan verbieden.
Het zou ons land internationaal bovendien nog verder in de versukkeling helpen. Op het gebied van seksualiteit waren we hier ooit vooruitstrevend, maar inmiddels lopen we ver achteraan in Europa.
Wat we dan altijd nog wel hebben zijn onze koffieshops en euthanasie; maar ja, daar krijgen onze buurlanden ook al lang geen erectie meer van.
Voorlopig houd ik het er optimistisch op dat de Nederlander, vrouw en man, te frivool is om zich door drie gereformeerde jongetjes terug naar de preutsheid van de jaren vijftig te laten bombarderen.

Over 'strings' gesproken, wat mis ik onze moslimitische medebloggre de heilige us Abdel toch. Had altijd zijn mond vol over strings maar verdedigde tegelijk het recht/plicht tot het dragen van hoofddoeken/boerkaas. Dikke maatjes met die andere pseudosexueel, waar me de naam nu ff van ontschoten is.

Je hebt helemaal gelijk over het ruchtbaarheid geven van zo'n Kingprijs voor Ayaan.

Tegelijk heb ik er een kritische kanttekening bij - heb ik al eerder gedaan: het is zo'n typisch Amerikaanse, raciale prijs. Van, kijk eens, wij prijzen onze zwarte zuster Ayaan voor haar moed.

Terwijl het enige wat die zwarte Amerikaanse brave burgers met Ayaan gemeen hebben, hun huidskleur is.

Laat onverlet dat ze blij kan zijn met die prijs. Maar dat er internationaal niet al teveel belang aan wordt gehecht kan ik ook wel begrijpen.
Als Ayaan, onder verder gelijke omstandigheden, een Chinees met een geel kleurtje was geweest, had ze deze prijs nooit gehad.

In observance of the King Federal Holiday, CORE-The Congress of Racial Equality host an annual Ambassadorial Reception and Awards Dinner in New York City. This event has grown to become one of the largest events in the country honoring Dr. King with more than 2,000 people from all walks of life attending each year. On these occasions we seek to bring together the most diverse elements --internationally and domestically--to reflect on how far we have come and commit to even greater progress in the areas of, world peace, justice and brotherhood. We also use these occasions to recognize individuals, who through their words and actions, have helped to further equality.

The Act creating the holiday was passed after more than sixteen years of effort by countless friends and supporters of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Support for the legislation came from all walks of life -- from members of Congress, the White House, business and labor, from civil rights and religious groups -- and, most important, from those individuals who have worked continuously to make his dream a reality.

Congress set aside the third Monday of January as the official Federal Holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr's actual birthday is January 15th. According to the Act, "the holiday should serve as a time for Americans to reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. King.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission has adopted "Living The Dream" as the official theme for celebrating this country's newest national holiday. The theme expresses the message and inspiration Dr. King generated among Americans in his dream and what that dream awakened in America.

CORE's first King Holiday Celebration was held in 1984--one year before the official holiday went into effect. Over the years, CORE's King Holiday Celebration has attracted the support and participation of leaders in the business, celebrity, diplomatic, civic, entertainment, religious and philanthropic communities. In 2002, the organization dedicated the event to the victims and heroes of the September 11th terrorist "Attack on America". We honored the Policemen, Firefighters and EMS workers who lost their lives in the World Trade Center while trying to save others. We also honored the crews of the 4 airplanes that the terrorist used. This award was accepted by Ms. Melonie Homer, widow of Captain J. Homer, co-pilot of United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. Howard Lutnick, President of Cantor Fitzgerald, Inc., who lost more that 400 employees, accepted an award on behalf of those who perished when the World Trade Center collapsed and Nino Vendome, owner of Nino's restaurant in lower Manhattan, who opened his kitchen to feed thousands of rescue workers involved in the recovery effort for free, accepted an award on behalf of the thousands of volunteers. The NYPD Pipes & Drums band performed Amazing Grace in a special tribute to the victims and heroes of that tragic event. Mayor Bloomberg presented CORE Chairman, Roy Innis with a special Proclamation.
